The 2010 Winter Olympics

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, were held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands, and in the resort town of Whistler. Approximately 2,600 athletes from 82 nations participated in 86. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games were being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC). The 2010 Winter Olympics were the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.
Following Olympic tradition, the then-current Vancouver mayor, Sam Sullivan, received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony and was on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics

A daughter's love for her dead mother or a skater's obligation to her sport: It's a stark choice that should not be demanded of Joannie Rochette.
Joannie Rochette dedicated that performance to her mom and, last week, placed the bronze medal on her mother's casket at the delayed funeral.
Thérèse Rochette was struck down by a massive heart attack within hours of arriving in the city to watch her daughter's bid for a medal at the Games.)http://olympics.thestar.com/2010/article/780416--dimanno-joannie-rochette-faced-with-a-stark-choice

Georgia dead after high-speed crash at Olympics

Nodar Kumaritashvili never had a chance.
He crashed almost head-first into a steel support pole after losing control of his luge at the Olympic Sliding Centre Friday morning.
The scene of the crash was no more than five or six metres from the $105 million centre’s first-aid station and medical personnel responded immediately, but the racer had no chance to survive the impact.
The B.C. Coroners Service, assisted by the RCMP, was on site Friday night conducting an investigation. The track remains closed and it’s not known how long the run will be shut.
Kumaritashvili was travelling a measured 134 km/h at the finish line of the course in his sixth and final practice ..

Ice Hockey: Canada beats US, capture third straight gold

Marie-Philip Poulin scored twice in the first period and goaltender Shannon Szabados made 28 saves to bring Canada the victory and bragging rights in a border war arch-rivalry between the sport's only two women's powers.

Snowboard cross: Ricker hands Canada second gold

Maelle Ricker became the first Canadian woman to win Olympic gold on home ground when she claimed victory in the snowboard cross on Tuesday.
Two days after Alexandre Bilodeau's win in the men's moguls freestyle had ended the hosts' long, painful wait for an Olympic title after two barren campaigns in Montreal in 1976 and Calgary 1988, Ricker made up for the disappointment she suffered in Turin four years ago.
At those Games, she crashed in the final and was treated in hospital for concussion.
